how hippo handles your data

the short, honest version

  • your name, email, and password when you sign up
  • your uploaded materials (syllabi, notes, slides) — encrypted at rest in supabase storage
  • your quiz answers, study preferences, and character name
  • your assessment scores and study activity (to power the preparedness score and streaks)
  • basic analytics: which pages you visit and features you use (helps hippo improve)
  • your grades or GPA from any school system (unless you enter them yourself)
  • your location or contacts
  • anything from your device outside hippo
  • to build your personalized study system (plans, guides, exams)
  • to send you nudges through the coach system (opt-out anytime)
  • to improve hippo over time (aggregate patterns, never individual data)
  • YOU always see all your data
  • anthropic (the makers of claude AI) processes your uploads to generate outputs — they don't train on your data or store it
  • google (calendar integration only) — only events hippo created, only if you connected calendar
  • no one else. we don't sell your data. we don't share with advertisers. we don't have advertisers.
  • see everything hippo has on you (email kenna@hippo.study — we'll send you a data export)
  • delete your account and all data anytime (settings → account → delete)
  • correct anything that's wrong
  • take your data with you if you leave
  • essential cookies for keeping you signed in
  • analytics cookies (posthog) — you can opt out in settings
  • no advertising cookies. ever.

hippo is for college students. we don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 13.

if you're under 18 you need a parent's ok to use hippo.
